BINOMIAL MARKET MODEL by Mantic Software Corporation
----------------------------------------------------
WHAT IT IS:
This FREEWARE uses a statistically driven simulation to
teach the theory and mathematics underlying the well-known
"Binomial Method" for calculating the fair value of an
option. It will also teach you exactly what is meant by
the "volatility" of a stock's price, and how volatility
is calculated. The software requires MS-Windows version 3.1
or later to run. Installation takes about 1/2 megabyte of
hard disk space.
The program is freeware - you are encouraged to redistribute
COMPLETE copies. It is not crippled or "downscaled".
No strings attached. See the end of this note for details on
where to get a copy by "ftp".
FEATURES:
Binomial Market Model includes an extensive Windows Help
file with an embedded hypertext article explaining the
software itself and the mathematical method. The article
explains in detail how volatility ("sigma" in option
pricing) is calculated and how sigma relates to the binomial
parameters.
Choose the 'Help | Contents' menu item in the BINOMIAL MARKET
window to get started.
The model simulates price movements in a market with
"binomial" statistics. You choose the Cox-Ross binomial
parameters. The software graphs the resulting stock price
movements, including long- and short-term moving averages,
and displays the corresponding volatility statistics.
It also shows the accumulating probability distribution
of the price movements and compares this to the log-normal
distribution used in the Black-Scholes option model.
Another feature calculates the probability of long "runs"
up or down in price.
The program can graphically display the binomial price
movement tree, and demonstrates on-screen how put and call
prices are extracted from the tree. Probability bars
illustrate the probability of each path through the tree.
It's a complete piece of software that makes some tricky
mathematics more understandable and visual. This software
was distributed at this year's Financial Management
Association annual meeting in St. Lous, and is being adopted
by several universities in conjunction with courses on options
or derivatives.
HOW TO GET A COPY OF BINOMIAL MARKET MODEL:
Use "ftp ftp.csn.org" and log in as "anonymous" .
For the password, give your full login address,
as if you were telling somebody how to send you email.
For example when asked for the password you might respond
with "charlie@somehost.com" or whatever identifies you.
Then "cd mantic" to get into the right directory.
Put ftp in binary mode with the "binary" command
and use the "get" command to copy three files:
get binmrkt.zip
get unzip.exe
get ftpinfo.txt
Download all three files into an otherwise empty directory
on your Windows-based PC. This directory can be named anything
EXCEPT "binmrkt".
Then select that download directory as the current directory
and from the Windows Program Manager FILE | RUN menu,
execute this command:
unzip.exe binmrkt.zip
This uncompresses the software. Then to install the
Binomial Market Model, execute the file "setup.exe"
that was just unpacked. It will create a new directory
"c:\binmrkt", set up icons, etc.
If you run the uncompressed "binmrkt.exe" file without
using the "setup.exe" installation routine, Binomial
Market Model may not work correctly or consistently.
Last, you can remove the directory used to unpack the zip file.
Run the program by double-clicking its icon. Choose the
'Help | Contents' menu item in the BINOMIAL MARKET
window to get started.
If you redistribute this freeware, please be sure to include
all three files you downloaded!
